Preface

“We need to have more than just a scientific meeting. We

need Chem 0x series of conferences to inspire not only

Faculty members but also postgraduate and even

undergraduate students”.

These are the words I addressed the organizing committee with in the year 2000

when we started Chem 01. Our colleagues kept this goal throughout the 7

conferences we organized and will try always to keep them. In Chem0x we tried

our best to invite distinguished speakers from Egypt and from all over the world.

This enriched the scientific discussions, kept us connected with the latest in

chemistry and allowed us to make new friends.

Chem 08 will feature some new activities. Five general lectures of wide interest

covering areas such as Spectroscopy and photoinduced phenomena,
Photodynamic therapy, nanostructures and sustainable energy. Our younger

colleagues are addressed by two lectures one on Study and research opportunities

in German universities and the other on the elements of excellence in Chemistry

teaching. We are sure that these general lectures in addition to the invited and

keynote talks will characterize Chem 08 as a non-forgettable scientific event.

Chem 08 has a very busy timetable with 18 sessions and more than 50 oral

presentations. In addition, three more parallel activities will be conducted. The

first is a roundtable discussion entitled “Entrepreneurship in Science: Towards a

sustainable society”. The other two activities are workshops. The first workshop

will be conducted in cooperation with the German university in Cairo, GUC, on

biotechnology. The second workshop on nanotechnology and will be conduct at

Egypt Nanotechnology Center, Cairo University.
