My parents always told me, "If you love what you do for a liv- ing, then you will never really have to work to make a living." The truth is today I would prob- ably be considered by some to be a workaholic, but to me, it's not that way and I know it's be- cause I enjoy what I do to pro- vide for my family. My buddy Vic Clevenger wrote a great ar- ticle last month about using sour lemons to make sweet
lemonade. I must say this type of advice is precisely what we all need to hear more of! Thanks, Vic!
As a youngster, I always love to tell folks, "I refuse to grow up." Maybe working in the watermelon patch and tobacco fields as a kid was just too much fun! I honestly have no idea who or where I picked up that saying from, but I still use it from time to time. There is no doubt that every time I use this phrase today, I am just joking. The real truth is I have been grown up now longer then I have
been a youngster. Guess that's what happens when you start working on 50!
Back in the late 1990s, KCBS started handing out these "Fun Me- ters" to cook teams and judges. Soon after receiving my own "Fun Meter," I realized that the number one rule in the BBQ world should always be to have fun. Regardless of how serious barbecue or grilling is in your life, it has to be fun, or else you might be considered a workaholic.
There is no doubt that life is much easier when the Fun Meter is redlined versus pegged over on the empty side. Even with the uncertain times we have had lately, I can honestly say my Fun Meter is still on the full mark.
In closing, I would be curious to know where your Fun Meter is registering lately. Drop me a line on Facebook or email me here and fill me in.
