Building The Sport Of Steak Cookoffs!
Let the Coronation Begin
All over the news this past month was talk of the 70th year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign over the United Kingdom and the Commonwealths. February 9, 1952, while on a trip to Africa, she received word of her father’s passing and her immediate accession to the throne as queen. This year of Jubilee celebration marks the longest reigning monarch in history of the United Kingdom. In June 1953, she had her coronation ceremony where the whole world was, for the first time, was able to watch via television. This was and still is a piece of history in the making.
This has me thinking about the world championship taking place March 11-13 and the crowning of the champions.
Once again, this will be a history making celebration. Last year we witnessed the first female steak cook, Sandy Brown, become the points champion. If this wasn’t enough, we witnessed the first female, Marissa Ouverson, become world champion steak cook. Every year there seems to be a history making event when it comes to the SCA Champi- onship. This coming year will be no different.
Already we are making history when Tim Brown is crown points champ. This will be the first time we have husband and wife champions. Not only this, in March we will give a ring to the spouse of the reigning champion, marking the first-time spouses succeed one another as champions. Once again showing everyone the SCA is very much family oriented.
Ancillaries had a renewed emphasis this past year with the winner of each given a golden ticket for the first ever ancil- lary cook-off. This cook-off, at the time of this writing, has 126 winners already registered. We are going to have our very first Ancillary World Cook-off Champion. Not only is this going to be a part of history, but we are going to wit- ness Tona Pendray receive the first ancillary points chase championship ring.
If you want to be a part of history in the making, then make sure you are in Ft. Worth, TX in March for the champi- onship weekend. You be able to tell your grandkids, “I was there!”
Event of the Month
If you are in the southern part of the country and looking for a place to cook then take a glance at March Mayhem Steak Cookoff in Marion, AR. Promoter Eric Johnson has an event which includes, not only a steak cook, but three an- cillaries. If you are looking to earn some points as you make a run for next year’s championship, this may be just the event for you. Also, the steak cook pays out all the way to the 20th spot. If you haven’t made your post champi- onship schedule yet, then this may be the event just for you.
