Building The Sport Of Steak Cookoffs!
 Judges
– No Judgement Here
Last month we spoke about our hard-working SCA reps and all they do to ensure a smooth contest each week. We would be re- miss if we did not mention, this month, the many judges who come out every week to the many contests offered. It doesn’t mat- ter which body it is, if the judges aren’t there then the contest is just a group of people getting together for a cookout. Any sanc- tioning body knows, the strength of their contests rests solely on the quality of the judging process. This is why there is a detailed training class before anyone can wear the title of SCA Judge.
Being a judge isn’t an easy task. Each judge gives up their week- end at home or on the lake to travel to some pretty remote places. Granted our promoters try to have great venues, but some of these great venues takes the scenic route to get there. But our judges don’t mind, they show up to guarantee the best event pos- sible. Being a judge is strictly on a volunteer basis, receiving no compensation for their journey and sometimes not even a “Thank You” but we can’t do this without you, the judge.
We appreciate the effort you take to not only travel, but set out the steaks, make sure the lines are in order and the plethora of other duties you perform each week. You do this task for your love of food competition and even more so, your love of the SCA. We cannot thank you enough for what you all do.
Business Partner
Many of our cooks have ac-
cepted Hasty-Bake grills as
their go to grill for not only
competitions but also at home.
This company, born in 1948, is
no ‘johnny come lately’ grill. In
1958 the US State Department
chose Hasty-Bake to represent
the USA in Brussels at the
World’s Fair. They have won
numerous awards including the Hess Award and have been on dis- play in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Each Hasty- Bake is made by hand here in the United States from American materials. We are so proud to have this prestigious company on board as one of our Business Partners.
Event Spotlight
There are events all over the southeast right now (not to mention
the rest of the country). Once such event is the Chimney Cartel & Schoolhouse Brewery Rock the Steak Cook-off. This event, held in Marietta, GA on August 14th will be one not to miss. There will be bands playing, the smell of steaks in the air and it’s hosted by a brewery, what more could you ask for? Steak A can be cooked on any heat source, but Steak B is to be cooked on a chimney. This will be exciting and fun for all the cooks. The ancillary will be “Anything with Beer.” Which, at a brewery, how could this not be? There will also be a Kid’s Cook-off as we encourage and bring up the next generation of SCA cooks.
Hassell Cattle Company Ancillary Points Chase
This is the place where creativity shines. Many a steak cook enjoys the ancillary cooks of an event. The promoters are getting creative with what they are asking the cooks to turn-in and the cooks are not disappointing. There is a continued buzz in the air about the ancillary golden ticket this year and it’s reflected with the points. Will Collier is leading the Top 10 with Tona Pendray and Kyle Ma-
