I got the cooking bug and received my first call at Bring’n Home the Bacon’s SCA competition last Fall and am now trying my hand at being an organizer of an SCA in South Dakota, where I now live, called PrairieFire. If you are a BBQ team or just interested in trying a competition and have a free weekend, find an SCA con- test on steakcookoffs.com and come out and cook a ribeye steak to a perfect medium. If you have a grill (any heat source works), a table, knife, your favorite rubs/spices, a canopy and a cooler for your beverages of choice, you are ready to cook an SCA contest. The entry fees are low, the payouts are usually $1,000 for 1st place with a decent overall prize pool and the ribeye steaks are pro- vided.
I have learned a lot over the last several months trying to balance putting on a contest and being mindful of growing the sport at the same time. It is tough finding an open weekend that works with your venue, the reps availability, a weekend with no other contest that would draw your cooks or judges AND fits into your own plans. Whew! If May 30th is open on your schedule, come to Sioux Falls, SD for an SCA double com- petition and join 35 teams vying for $4,800 in prize money be- tween both comps. We will also be crowning the SD State SCA Champion. Visit steakcookoffs.com to see flyers from any contest that interests you.
As with most SCA events, the proceeds will benefit a charity. PrairieFire’s charity is the Children’s Home Society of SD. Troy Johnson will be hosting 3 different SCA events in Lakeville this summer. One event will benefit Steaks 4 Sheepdogs (feeding first responders) and the other 2 will benefit the community hockey association. The contest in Albert Lea will benefit the Big Island Rendezvous (a historical re-enactment event for students) and the Rochester contest benefits the VFW.
Check out all the planned SCA events currently part of the MBS Steak Points Chase and watch for future additions and changes to “The Chase” as we finalize all the details.
