This month's profile is of a highly visible individual is a fixture at most BBQ competi- tions in Florida. Tim Maloy is the current points leader in the Florida BBQ Association and is off to an excellent start for 2020. After such a strong start, it's unfortunate that most con- tests through the Spring and Summer months have been canceled, postponed, or rescheduled to later dates.
Tim formed the barbecue team,
Backyard Bros, a few years ago and has been very successful for such a short time in the BBQ World. Saturday morning, at most Florida contests, begins at the Backyard Bros site on the competi- tion grounds. All the cook teams show up for their morning words of wisdom from Tim and a shot of Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey. That has become his trademark. You will see it on his drum smok- ers and frequently in Tim's hand during the day.
At the end of a long day of food preparation and schedule adher- ence, Tim is joined by Jim Elser, of Sweet Smoke Q fame, for a live stream video over social media. They live stream the Tim and Jim show on Facebook for all the barbecue world to enjoy. The specifics of the current contest are always addressed as well as their individual performance for the day. The duo also will chat about anything peculiar or specific things that are particular to the event. Many of the teams and judges will usually drop by to take in the Tim and Jim presentation while it is being videoed. Frequently they will have a guest join them for these programs.

While competing in Davenport, the Mayor joined them for part of the show and discussed the importance of competi- tion BBQ to the City of Davenport. Other cooks will some- times join them to participate in the presentation as well as BBQ dignitaries. This program is generally shot before the awards ceremony, so none of them know who the win- ners are for the weekend. Tim has added a very nice and quality touch to the BBQ events in Florida.
As far back as Tim can remember, he was an intense com- petitor. He played sports growing up and remembers hi very serious competitive attitude toward just about every sport he participated in. He's a fierce golfer and takes the game very seriously. His kids grew up playing baseball and he was involved with their sport from the beginning. Sometimes he felt he was too competitive and his intensity was maybe a bit too much.
After his kids grew up and moved on, he found his compet-
itive attitude not being fulfilled. He started looking around to satisfy his needs and he came across the competition BBQ cir- cuit. He put together a team and tried to get his 18-year-old son involved. That didn't work out. His first contest in 2014 was the Pigs in Z Hills BBQ in Zephyrhills, where he entered the backyard event. This was a learning experience for Tim and it was clear that he needed to do a lot more than enter the contests. He enrolled in some cooking classes, including Jim Elser's and Matt Barber's cooking schools. After five or six more contests, he was getting calls and decided to move up to the Pro category.
He felt his roots were in the backyard division and decided to keep that in his name, Backyard Bros. He taught some classes as he had his feet on the BBQ competition ground, and he gets credit for teaching some championship quality teams. One, in particular, is Cooters N Smoke who climbed the backyard division ranks pretty fast after winning several Grand Championships at the backyard level. Today this team is a contender in the pro division and is climbing the success ladder quickly.
