Behind every successful man is a woman. Indeed, this is not a new observation, but an appropriate one here. Tim's lovely bride, Patty, is with him at every contest and always supports the team. Patty told me she didn't feel right going on stage to accept win- nings unless
she had con-
tributed to the
preparation of
the meat en-
tries. She is key
to the sauces
used and in
some cases the
seasonings. Be-
cause of her ef-
forts she is
now comfort-
able joining
the team in the
winner's circle.
Recently, in Mulberry, Patty surprised everyone when she donned a bright pink piggy costume. They took first in pork and rib cate- gories, and Ms. Patty Piggy was right there on stage with the rest of the team, in costume.
Early on they wanted a mascot. Rub Bagby's team, Swamp Boys, always had a skeleton present at his trailer during events. Tim asked Rub if he could steal his skeleton mascot and Rub agreed. They named the skeleton Brisket and now have numerous skele- tons present at every contest. Today you will never see this team in the winner's circle without at least one skeleton, and it is usu- ally being held by Patty. We often ask what part of the food prepa- ration was done by the skeletons.
Mike and Monica Jones are also vital parts of this very successful team and have been cooking with Tim for several years. Mike competed with his own team for many years before bringing his expertise to Backyard Bros. Tim is a very successful and large painting contractor in the Tampa Bay area. Unfortunately, those significant business demands on his time create challenges to his BBQ schedule. However, he makes most of the Florida contests and raises the bar for the other teams to compete. When an event hosts a Kid's Q, Tim almost always helps and coaches a Kid's Team in their entries. Because of this effort, the kid's winner's circle nearly always has a skeleton or two beside the winning kid's teams. Tim is always giving back to the BBQ Family.
Perhaps the most unique and noticeable aspect of Tim and his Backyard Bros. BBQ team is that they always have fun. Tim told me, "If it stops being fun, we will stop doing it." His Saturday
morning welcoming session is only one part of his fun activities at a BBQ contest. The Tim and Jim show is yet another. His life now revolves around the BBQ family that exists at BBQ contests as he always stays over Saturday nights to have fun with his friends, and BBQ family. Every competition is serious, and he would not
trade that for anything, but the time with the BBQ family is equally im- portant to Tim.
I always enjoy filming this team in the winner's circle because they always put on a show for me. You will defi- nitely see what
I mean from the photos included in this article. I never know what to expect from Backyard Bros in the winner's circle. The skeletons are always there, frequently a costume or two, like Ms. Piggy. Who knows what else Tim will come up with next. No one has fun like Backyard Bros and Tim Maloy, at a BBQ competition. They are truly unique.
