During these strange times the Minnesota BBQ Society is looking at many things to keep everyone engaged. We are working on a quarterly newsletter covering Pitmaster recipes, a For Sale sec- tion, and highlights on teams and judges. If you have something to add to the newsletter send it to The MBSnewsletter@gmail.com
May is National Barbeque Month and is a celebration of all things BBQ. I had an opportunity to speak with Emily Detwiler, the CEO of KCBS. During our conversation we started to talk about how Covid-19 has affected BBQ and contests around the country and even the world. She told me that she is trying to keep her finger on the pulse. KCBS is trying to keep BBQ out in front of judges,
teams, sponsors and everyone in competition food sports, as we are social distancing. I found it interesting how much work is being done on logistics for contests. KCBS has made modification recommendations to make contests safer. What I found refreshing was Emily’s outlook and how positive she is. She talked about how her team is continually looking at contests and what they can do to help them be successful. She has a passion for contest organizers, and sympathizes with the difficult decisions the or- ganizers have had this year, whether to move, postpone, or cancel contests. Emily
and her team are trying to be flexible with or- ganizers who are moving con- tests to later in the year, or postponing con- tests until next year.
Her team is
working hard
on keeping
everyone en-
gaged. At the
close of our
conversation
she talked about how this BBQ season is going to have a lot of twists and turns for everyone. Think about how our BBQ family will remember these times. We need to take control of the memo- ries that are being created right now for the future generations of BBQers. Through all the awful headlines and emotional stories that they will come to read in future years, they will also be able to remember some happy times. This season is one that will de- fine us in BBQ going forward and we should continue to build positive memories for all. What will your memories be?
The society is getting close to releasing its new membership soft- ware system that will make it easier to renew, and sign up for events that MBS is offering.
An MBS online apparel store is close to being up and running. We will start out offering our ‘Minnesota in MayAugust’ contest clothing at this MBS merchandise store and we hope to expand this to more apparel in the future.
