Building The Sport Of Steak Cookoffs!
 We’re Back...Almost
By: SC Angus
As this is being written NASCAR will be the first major sports organization to be back but with major restrictions. They’ll be driving in Darlington in front of empty seats. There will be no expressions of joy such as high fives or hugs for a job well done. Victory Lane will be as lonely as the driver’s seat for the winner because of the social distancing rules in place.
Major League Baseball are in talks about hav- ing opening day on July 4th and I couldn’t think of a better day for America’s pastime to throw out the first pitch of the season. There will be plenty restrictions when they take the field, but the bottom line is sports are back... almost.
For about two months the SCA has been without any live contests which has about driven everyone mad. Ken & Brett did a great job helping to alleviate this boredom with SCA-TV (pay attention to this on a weekly basis) which had cooks and judges from all over the country. One week, Brett even had a mixologist on to teach us how to make a couple unique drinks. Everyone was voting for the best hamburger and hotdog during the
SCA virtual contests (won by Damon Holter and Tom Pippin, respectively). So, the SCA founders deserve a virtual round of applause. As fun as it has been, it’s just not the same as getting together each week. But this is all changing, with some restrictions, of course.
When contests in Texas and Alabama oc- curred Mother’s Day weekend, there was much rejoicing even with the extra re- strictions in place. These are in line with the region’s public regulations in mind (not official SCA regulations). Things such as: No cooks meeting as we’ve known in the past but using PA systems, one person per team choosing the steaks, masks for the steak handlers and social distancing being observed. For the judges a few things changed as well such as: no grazing table, judges’ tables were two 8-foot tables and all persons in the

judges’ tent were required to wear masks, among other things. The awards ceremony looked a lot like the cooks meeting where a PA system was put through its paces, trophies would be placed on a table for the recipients to pick up themselves and pictures would be observing a social distance of six feet.
Keep in mind this was a partial list of the re- quirements for one event location based on that district’s regulations for events. The real take away from all of this is, not the masks (although an SCA mask would rock) or the so- cial distancing between teams but rather we are back to live competitions. We Are The SCA!
 Business Partner
Our business partner, Hasty Bake, has one of the most unique sto- ries in grilling. In 1948, Grant Hastings produced the first Hasty- Bake Charcoal Grill. Hasty-Bake introduced the first portable unit, the first hooded unit, and a new method of cooking using indirect heat. Hasty-Bake Charcoal Grills have attracted a lot of attention
over the years. It was selected by the State Department to represent the United States at the Brussels World's Fair in 1958. It also won the Hess Award in 1962, and they have been on display in the Chicago Museum of Science and In- dustry.
ACE Hardware Points Chase
With the advent of cookoffs beginning again you can bet the ACE Hardware points chase will continue to be anyone’s game. John Pendray is holding on to his lead but by only 4 points over Layne Holmes. Third place Sandy Brown and fourth place Jerry Buchan are within striking distance by being less than 10 points away. If that isn’t a tight enough race, think about this, there’s only 35 points from 10th to 1st. With all the up- coming events expect a lot more shuf- fling of the points chase.
