The Northeast Barbecue Society is pleased to announce the formal launch of Hunger Smoked. Hunger Smoked is a non-profit loosely affiliated with NEBS. The motto of this charity is “delivering hope through barbecue” and it’s a mechanism for the BBQ community in the northeast to give to those in need. Hunger Smoked is focused on preparing and distributing BBQ meals to people in need, including shelters for the homeless and the abused, along with first responders and other groups that support under- served communities.
This started at Christmas in 2015 as a project at NEBS member Mic Stanfield's house. Mic cooked BBQ, sides and dessert for fifteen people living in tents in Rhode Island to bring them a little holiday joy. Seeing the joy it brought people, the following year Mic contacted a shelter near Boston and enlisted the help of some other NEBS members to cook and distribute food for 200 people.
In 2017 things started to move. Mic moved the delivery date to New Years, so more NEBS members, other organiza- tions and caring friends could participate. Operations were moved to a local Rhode Island commissary to handle the growing volume and comply with health department re- quirements as the number of meals served climbed to 400 supporting three shelter locations. Along the way the team continued to add BBQ side dishes and desserts to the offer- ing.
The project has continued to grow ever since. Now with the support of local BBQ restaurants, supermarket chains, and other regional charities, and the growing challenges of keeping people fed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is time to go bigger.

Hunger Smoked is launching as a stand-alone charity in 2020. The goal is to support more shelters and food pantries, give local donors a more formal way to help, and expand beyond the year-end holidays. Hunger Smoked re- mains affiliated with the Northeast Barbecue Society, and gives local competitors, judges, event organizers, BBQ en- thusiasts, other organizations and caring friends a way to contribute time, expertise, and financial support to the ef- fort.
Hunger Smoked has served thousands of meals so far and has dozens of participants. The charity will rely on donated time, food products, and facilities to carry out its mission. If you would like to help, please visit hungersmoked.org or facebook.com/hungersmoked
Ideas for the Smokin' Grillin' Man in your life for Father's Day!
We asked some questions and got you some answers as to the best gifts for Father's Day.
We asked an unsolicited, unpaid group of friends in the BBQ community and many friends who are backyard BBQ'ers what their ideas were - many brands were men- tioned but you have to make your own educated, re- searched decisions... these are just the opinions of some!
Top items to have in your backyard arsenal (in no particular order):
- A starter grill was definitely a kettle type grill; very versa- tile, affordable and easy to use
- The most recommended and reasonably affordable grills / smokers were ~ Weber Kettle, Weber Smokey Mountain, other ideas included a Big Green Egg and drum-style smok- ers
- Surprising and an overwhelming number of votes came for the Charcoal Chimney with the Weber brand being the most popular and best product; many stated it lasts longer than any other brand
