Give Thanks!
Although we devote one day of the year to observe Thanksgiving as a national holiday, every barbecuer I know gives thanks 365 days a year. Beyond the old saw about checking the daily obituary to affirm that we’re still alive, we give thanks every day to a cornucopia of blessings. On a peaceful spring or summer day when the sun is out and the verdant landscape is alive with birdsongs, gentle breezes, the aroma of honeysuckle, gardenia, hickory smoke from barbecue pits and other sniffs of heaven on earth, we take it all in like a heart- felt embrace from a loved one.
Then there’s the massive physical and social infrastruc- ture that we tend to take for granted except when it isn’t working. Electricity, gas, storm water and sanitary sewer systems, clean tap water, roads, bridges, high- ways, the Internet & other communications systems, production and supply chains, and the many fellow hu- mans who are essential to our health and well-being:
- Operation BBQ Relief Donors & Volunteers
- Health care workers
- Medical researchers
- Garbage & recycling collectors, managers & landfill
workers
- Government workers
- Postal workers
- Agricultural workers
- Meat processing workers
- Truckers
- Grocery and supermarket staff
- Grocery delivery workers
- Small business owners & staff
- Food service industry workers
- Entertainers
- Artists
- Journalists, reporters, news media workers
The more I think about who to thank for our daily sur- vival, the longer the list grows. Be sure to add others that I have missed, including, of course, the Almighty.
Mother’s acceptance that “Life is difficult” was not an excuse for giving up. She faced life’s difficulties with re- solve, prayers, persistence and mutual help from rela- tives, friends and neighbors. During this time when a deadly virus is gripping the entire planet, our interde- pendence stares us in the face. Kudos and thanks to you and all others who are getting us through this, one day at a time!
