When I look back at my BBQ timeline, many BBQ greats come to mind quickly. Mike Mills, Rocky Danner, Don "Doc" Gillis, Billy Bones, Joe Phelps, Ardie Davis, Myron Mixon, and the list could go on for days. One of the names that will always be at the top of this list is the name, Jim Tabb. If anyone ever loved the barbecue lifestyle, it was Mr.
info@barbecuenews.com Jim.
This guy was one of my "BBQ
knows it all" when I first started my publishing career with the Barbecue News. I learned a tremendous about what the BBQ lifestyle was all about. With countless phone calls during my early years, I would ask questions, and Mr. Jim would always shoot me an honest and straight answer...even if it was not exactly the an- swer I was looking for!
One of these early conversa- tions was about a new pork product he had seen and sampled while visiting a North Carolina University. He told me, "This boneless piece of processed to death pork is going to make someone a ton of money one day." I re- member my jaw dropping after hearing this "BBQ Know It All" predict that something other than real barbecue was going to be a huge hit. A few years later, it turned out he was dead on with his predic- tion as the McRib sandwich is still selling like crazy today.
Mr. Jim Tabb, one of my favorite BBQ heroes, passed away on January 27, 2020. Barbecue News will be following this up with a tribute article soon. We send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his entire family and friends.
