On 13th February we took the TranzAlpine to cross the South Island and the five hour journey did not disappoint. The train crossed the Canterbury Plains then followed the spectacular Waimakariri Gorge and river. Once across the Southern Alps, there was a huge change of flora and scenery with cultivated plains and a village by Lake Brunner.
