 As we rolled slowly into Greymouth there was another mad dash to the car hire desk, whilst I fished out our cases from the pile on the platform.
This time, Alastair was lucky and we were allocated a white SUV which happily accommodated everything in the boot.
Here on the West coast, many towns like Greymouth, have a colourful goldmining history.
It is said to be always wet here, but we were able to enjoy the wild coastline, Westland National Park and Lake Mapourika, as we drove two hours south to Franz Josef Glacier.
Here we stayed in a Rainforest Retreat Deluxe house on stilts. The forest and wooded hills loomed beyond our veranda.
