The Village of Oak Park needs a clear, thoughtful process that can be carried out without burden across village staff and volunteer commissions. We will partner with these various stakeholders to create criteria, thresh- olds and processes for establishing an issue or initiative as one that requires robust community engagement.
Typical criteria are: social/civil importance, investment level, or major zoning or development allowances.
Recent or current initiatives that would benefit from this process are:
• Albion/high rise development
• Pete’s/non-residential development • Madison Ave
• Oak Park Police reform/funding
It is important to note that, once developed, a robust process can be scaled up or down based on the ini- tiative. Additionally, Oak Park has the opportunity to focus on issues instead of initiatives (Business Corridor Development as opposed to “Pete’s on Madison”) as a way to engage in a robust process that can inform future decisions writ large. The future of our community can be shaped with intention, from a place of proactivity rather than reactivity, when we have a plan and process in place.
Once criteria is developed and a process established, we will work with village staff to codify and communicate the process both internally and externally. The following are examples of materials that have been created in support of Community Engagement Processes.
