THE END...FOR NOW
I began my genealogy research in 2011 and was diligent for a few years. Eventually other projects in my life took precedent and my genealogy work was set aside.
Then my sister and I took a three week trip to Ireland in May of 2019. We visited the areas of Ireland associated with my mother's side of the family, County Kilkenny and County Kerry. I was able to unearth a few more names for that side of my tree.
I discovered that some of my ancestors had came from Thomastown in Kilkenny. They had floated down the River Nore to the port of Waterford, where they would board the fishing vessels bound for Newfoundland and the Grand Banks. Initially as seasonal fishermen but eventually as permanent settlers in Canada and America.
I met my third cousins in County Kerry and stood on the land where the old Hennessey homestead once stood. Home of my second great grandparents, Richard Hennessey and Ellen Kennelly. I took home some mementos of that land to place on my land here in America.
This trip moved me to revisit my family tree when I returned home.
I started by revising the maternal side of my tree with the information that I had gathered in Ireland. It was then that I discovered that new information was available to me on Ancestry.com with the assistance of ThruLines and improved DNA matching.
The result of that discovery is this book about my father's side of the tree.
I hope that new advances in DNA will allow all of us to delve even deeper into our past.
