For the brief period of 1934-37, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer came to live and work in Britain, and although our introverted island wasn’t particularly receptive to their radical ideas, they had a profound impact on young British architects across Britain. 14 / April-May 2020 / ve www.vintagexplorer.co.uk Designed in 1935 by the architect Mel- ville Aubin for Mr G. B. Jordain, this house is highlighted as one of the finest properties in Devon by the eminent architectural his- torian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in his celebrated ‘Buildings of England’ series. Having remained in the same family for almost 80 years, much of the building’s architectural features and integrity remain intact, aided by some restorative work by the current owners. The accommodation is arranged over three levels, with the second floor comprising of a fabulous roof terrace with far-reaching views across the Devon countryside. (Oh to be there now!) The elegant portico door opens to an impressive, beautifully light entrance hall with original timber panelling and a solid parquet floor flows through the house unify- ing the interior spaces.
