ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHS BY CARLA DE BENEDETTI cdbstudio.com WITH THANKS TO RESEARCHER ALESSANDRO MORELLI alessandromorelli.it STUDIO BENEDE De TTI SERIES THREE: Cini Boeri BOERI HAD MANY strings to her bow; in the course of her long career she focused on architecture, industrial design and interior furnishings. After graduating from the Polytechnic of Milan, she worked for a short time with Gio Ponti, before collaborating with architect Marco Zanuso prior to establishing her own studio in 1963. She always approached architecture and interior design on the psychological relationships between humans and their environments. In her view, architecture is a kind of container for people’s lives, and as such should enhance their happiness. This means that the structures must take account of, and harmonise with, the social context and surrounding landscape. www.vintagexplorer.co.uk Milanese WOMEN DOMINANT IN DESIGN Cini Boeri designed showrooms for Knoll, furniture for Arflex, lighting for Artemide and homewares for Rosenthal to name a few – not bad going for a woman who trained as an architect! MILAN APARTMENT Towards the end of the 1960s Boeri worked on the interior design of a large apartment in the center of Milan. The location of the building is particularly fortunate, since it overlooks three streets and a garden. The interior spaces were therefore reorganised so as to take advantage of this. The chairs in the dining area are the Cesca model, designed by Marcel Breuer, distinguished by their steel frame and red cloth covering. Above the table is an Arco lamp made of steel with a marble base, designed by Achille Castiglioni. The prototype was developed by the Milanese company Allestimenti Portanuova and thereafter the lamp was manufactured by Flos.
