True Case No (9) : We Want it Too !

Dr. Adel is a general dentist has had private clinic since16
years. The private clinic is in a booming suburb that greatly in-
creased in size and become crowded since he started practice.
For the last 8 years most of his practice has been directed to
esthetic dentistry. He invited many for continuing education pro-
gram to present his skills in cosmetic dentistry.

Samah is a new patient in the clinic. She is 16 years old. She and
her mother completed health history and was written laminate ve-
neer makeover as the chief complaint. Examination of her mouth
revealed excellent care and attention with sealant on her molars
and “ideal” dentition in regard to tooth position color, size shape
and tissue health and architecture. If you were searching for a
picture for ideal smile in dentistry, a photograph of Samah would
be appropriate.

Dr. Adel is puzzled about the request of veneers. Her parents
invited to discuss his finding, her father say we come to you to
do veneers on all of her teeth, he explains that she in competitive
pageant and veneers will give her a competitive edge. They want
longer and “chalky white” teeth that really stand when she smiles.
They even have pictures from a magazine and the internet show-
ing “the before and after” and how veneers improve the smile.
Her mother says look, all of our competitors are having it done
and we want it too! The parents both remark the dental veneers
are always a part of the new extreme makeover shows. They ex-
plain, we tried every type of bleaching from another dentist and it
is not chalky enough and she now complains of cold hurting her
teeth. Samah is very quiet during all conversation.

Dr. Adel explain that Samah has ideal smile which can be
taken as a model, and veneers are invasive and needs some
grinding of some tooth structure and irreversible and may be of
some harm to Samah teeth. He even says, I wouldn’t do veneers
if Samah my daughter -she has a great smile.

Her father says, she is not your daughter, and veneers may be
