6. PAYMENT DURING ILLNESS
6.1 Statutory Sick Pay
If the rules relating to absence are followed, the illness is considered genuine, and you are entitled to it, you will qualify for statutory sick pay (SSP) after you have been absent from work for in excess of three working days. (Or in line with current legislation should this prove different.) Where you do not qualify for SSP, we would advise you to contact the Department for Work & Pensions for further advice.
6.2 Company Sick Pay
Company sick pay is a discretionary benefit which will be paid according to your contractual terms and conditions of employment and on the basis that the rules relating to absence are followed and the illness is considered genuine. Entitlements will be calculated based on your length of service and the applicable annual allowance at the time of the absence, less the amount of sick pay you have taken in the twelve month period immediately preceding the first day of illness.
The rate of Company Sick Pay is inclusive of Statutory Sick Pay. Your personal entitlement to company sick pay will be detailed in your contract of employment.
Unless otherwise stated, you will not be entitled to Company Sick Pay during the first six months of your employment.
6.3 Sickness Prior and During Annual Leave
If you unfortunately fall sick immediately prior to or during a holiday period, you will receive sick pay (if entitled) for the period of illness but only if supported by a valid fit note.
In such cases you may be entitled to reclaim the period of annual leave covered by a fit note to be used at a time when you are well. In such cases the normal request for annual leave procedure will apply as will the normal obligations relating to reporting sickness and keeping your line manager aware of your progress on a weekly basis.
