 Educating Students
JAS Local Education Initiatives complement existing public school music programs and replace programs where schools suffer losses in music education. The goal is to ensure that these schools maintain band and music in their curriculum. Read more about these JAS Initiatives and 2018 results below.
JAS In-Schools Faculty
Assistance Program
1,900+ hours provided
Provides funding to bring local musicians into classrooms to offer student assistance in an instrument that is not their teachers discipline, or in classes that are too large for the teachers to provide the individual instruction needed.
Pays to Play
150 hours utilized by 50+ students
Fund allowing youth to take private music lessons in any discipline from an instructor recommended by JAS. JAS pays for the first three hours of lessons to increase opportunities for music education while supporting the economy of local musicians.
Stuff for Students
16 keyboards, 10 trumpets, 14 guitars, 3 marimba mallets, 2 alto saxophones, 2 Beat Lab sets,
2 drum stands, 2 snare drums, piano, zylophone, tuba, percussion instruments, clarinet, marching band and Beat Lab accessories, numerous repairs and more still to come!
Supports local schools through new instrument and equipment donations and funds to repair broken instruments throughout the school year.
JAS District 8 Honor Jazz Program
75 student participants
Students from across the Western Slope of Colorado are nominated by their instructors to attend a weekend of workshops, sectionals and public concerts with a faculty from accredited music programs at CU, DU and Mesa State College.
JAS Summer Camps
40 student participants
Four sessions of band camps including beginner, intermediate, and advance each summer, plus
a camp for Beat Lab students. Each session ends with an exciting public performance from the students.
Student Field Trips
14 RFV students visited under-served Commerce City Middle School to meet and perform with students, followed by a visit
to Metro State University in Denver and a performance at the Colorado Conservatory
for the Arts. 36 students from Commerce City visited Glenwood Springs High School to meet and perform with students.
Funding of various field trips for students throughout the year to attend jazz festivals, visit colleges, collaborate with other schools or other academic opportunities.
JAS Beat Lab
New FREE summer program offered at Basalt and Glenwood Springs Public Libraries in collaboration with Take Note Colorado
The Beat Lab is an opportunity for small groups
of students to compose music. The program was designed to introduce students to the concepts
and creation of electronic music and tracks while simultaneously having them create the music that is being used for these tracks.
JAS Step-Up Program
The goal of this program is to encourage and help local students acquire professional quality instruments so they will be better equipped to succeed in their musical goals and ambitions. Families apply for available funds and are eligible to receive assistance towards the cost of the new instrument.
Tickets for Teachers
400+ tickets distributed
Provides complimentary performance tickets to teachers and students throughout the Aspen and Roaring Fork Valley school districts to attend the JAS Experiences, JAS Café performances and more.
