August 5-18, 2019
World-renowned bassist and 6-time Grammy winner CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE returned to his role as the JAS Academy Artistic Director, leading 21 talented young jazz musicians in the new Academy “Big Band” curriculum. Students worked with McBride and other Jazz “Masters” including Dianne Reeves, Shelly Berg, Benny Green, Russell Malone, Peter Martin, Rey Sanchez, Terreon Gully and Reginald Veal in the 2018 all-scholarship program. The week concluded with a live Big Band performance at the JAS Café featuring the students under McBride’s direction.
JAS is in the early planning stages to enhance and expand the Academy residency in association with the prestigious FROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI. Under the direction of 5-time Grammy nominee Dean SHELLY BERG, the Frost School of Music has become a nationally recognized program for its focus on producing successful musicians trained not just in performance but in the business of music. The plan is to ultimately extend the Academy into a summer long program.
