NARM Model for Working with Affect
§It is essential to know what our client’s emotions are actually about §We can never assume we know exactly what our clients are feeling
§We want to identify if the emotion is freeing the client from an old identification or reinforcing an old identification?
§Is this emotion one that leads toward completion or one that keeps them stuck in old patterns?
• Default Emotions are those that we are familiar with, unconsciously comfortable with, that tend to be repetitive, habitual and automatic
• Primary Emotions are those that take us into new territory, that we may be unconsciously uncomfortable with or even fight against, but that lead toward integration and re-organization
§Is our client’s anger/grief in service of regression and old identifications or in service of greater connection, more aliveness and a more organized self?
