 Victorian Showmen’s Guild President 2002 – 2019 Awarded Life Membership 2013
50 Year Member 2017 Longstanding Committee Member Member since 1966
It is with great sadness that I write my editor’s message for the April – June issue, and report that on the 19th March 2019 Mr. Max Laurie OAM passed away, aged 76 after a brave battle with illness.
He was widely known as the longstanding President of the Victorian Showmen’s Guild and a stalwart of the Agricultural Show Movement.
Max Laurie OAM was President of the Victorian Showmen’s Guild for 17 years, a Life Member, 50 Year Member, longstanding Committee Member and Member of the Guild since 1966.
Max Laurie OAM gave outstanding and devoted service to the Victorian Showmen’s Guild, the Agricultural Show movement and the Australian Amusement Industry, for which he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2013.
Based in Dubbo, Max would travel great distances to chair the Victorian Showmen’s Guild executive committee meetings, annual general meetings, general meetings, attend the annual VAS Ltd Conventions, meet with Show Societies and assist with Guild Member matters.
He did this tirelessly, devoting his much-valued time to the Guild, wherever and whenever required.
Max played a fundamental role in our organisation. He put a smile on the face of millions each year with his love of amusement rides and the Industry in general.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the caring condolence messages, cards and kind words received over the past few months; which have been conveyed to Max’s wife Irene and children Denver and Jeannie.
Your messages, conversations, reflections and wonderful stories have helped us come to terms with our loss.
Former Executive Officers Brian and Maxine Sinclair had the pleasure of working with Max Laurie OAM for over 20 years, and wish to convey their sincere sympathies to the Laurie family in the sad passing of their great colleague and friend.
Max was an exceptional leader and will be sadly missed by me, the Executive Officer, the Secretary, Treasurer and Trustee as well as the entire Executive Committee and Members of the Victorian Showmen’s Guild.
A dear colleague and friend; gone but never forgotten. Till we meet again.
