Facility recommendations: Head lice do not survive long if they fall off a person and cannot feed. Here are a few Club-related recommendations:
• Vacuum the floor and furniture (including van seat cushions and head rests), particularly where the infested person sat or lay. However, the risk of getting infested by a louse that has fallen onto a rug or carpet or furniture is very small. Head lice survive less than 1-2 days if they fall off a person and cannot feed; nits cannot hatch and usually die within a week if they are not kept at the same temperature as that found close to the human scalp. Spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid infestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing.
• Do not use fumigant sprays or pesticides; they can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
If a child is found to have active, live head lice in their hair, that child should be separated from other children and their parent/guardian called for immediate pick up. The child is able to return to programming after they have been treated for lice with a recommended shampoo and have been rechecked by a staff member or given written clearance by medical personnel. As long as no active lice are found, children are able to return to programming. The child should be re-checked after 7 days.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale does not have a “no nits policy.” Because no disease process is associated with head lice, youth serving organizations are not advised to exclude students when nits remain after appropriate lice treatment. Head lice can be a nuisance, but they have not been shown to spread disease. Children with nits can return to club programming as long as they have been treated, re-checked by a staff member or given written clearance from medical personnel and no active lice are found. The child should be re-checked after 7 days. Only parents/guardians of students with active lice will be notified.
Policy No. 122 – Prescription Medication Policy
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale urges parents/guardians to schedule any necessary medication that needs to be taken outside of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale attendance. If medication must be administered during Club hours, it must be done so in accordance with the following policy.
The purpose of this policy is to provide control over the administration and use of medications by members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, to assure that such drugs are prescribed by and administered according to the instructions of a physician; and to promote and facilitate good health and medical treatment of members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.
If the administration of any drug prescribed by a physician requires specific training, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale will be unable administer the medication. Such medication will need to be administered outside of Club hours.
Authorization Requirements
• For a member whose medication must be administered at the Club, a health plan for each medication must be in place before the administration of the medication.
• The parents/guardians of the member must meet with the director prior to the authorization of medication usage to outline dosage, frequency and items relating to the use of the medication.
