POWDERS
Many types of powders are available for the development of latent Powders
fingerprints. With fresh fingerprints the aqueous component of the
fingerprint contributes significantly to the adhesion of the powders. With
older fingerprints, when most of the water has evaporated, powders
adhere principally to the fatty deposits of the sebaceous sweat content.
The effectiveness of powdering is variable depending on the chemical
and physical nature of the powder, the type of applicator and the care
and expertise of the operator.
CSI have developed a number of powders and applicators to cope with any situation that an investigator may find himself in.
These powders include Magneta Flake™ Light and Dark and the new ‘Magneta Nano’ powders currently being manufactured
along with spring loaded magnetic brushes allowing for both horizontal and vertical surfaces to be examined. (See product
codes 95150, 95151 and 95152).

dusting situations i.e. on glass, metallic surfaces, highly varnished wooden surfaces, enameled articles etc. It is not suitable for
wet, very rough or dirty surfaces.
The wearing of an appropriate dust respirator is recommended and especially during lengthy examinations or in confined and
poorly ventilated areas.

A powder suitable for general use and noted for its black hue.
To obtain the best possible results the brush must be fully charged with powder prior to dusting as insufficient powder on the
brush may be unsuitable. Extreme care should be taken when using this colour to avoid spillage and dust clouds which may
prove difficult to remove from a person’s property. Stories are abundant from CSI’s who have inadvertently spilt black powder
on light coloured carpets to find to their horror that this powder is impossible to clean up completely.
