Modern Rope Bondage

Although there are riggers and rope bunnies who prefer to stick strictly to either the
Western or, more typically, the Eastern style of rope bondage, and particularly shibari,
my own style of rope bondage is an amalgamation of the two styles along with my own
tweaks. Shibari especially has an incredibly passionate and talented community, and
though I love and appreciate the sensuous art of shibari, there’s just nothing I like more
than to take a few bunnies up to my cottage on the weekend and spend a few days figuring
out new ways to tie them while they sensually squirm in their bonds. This is the beauty of
bondage; there’s no way to do it wrong, and there’s lots of room for your own innovation.
Only safety is the ruling common denominator.

That’s not to say, however, that there are no rules in rope bondage. In fact, there are many
and just as many conventions. As with any activity in which one person takes responsibility
for another’s health and well-being, there are certain guidelines that have to be known and
adhered to so that the only injuries sustained during a scene are the lashes from a cane or
a strained eardrum from listening to your submissive beg for mercy. We’ll talk about these
in the next chapter.

There are, of course, artistic rules of aesthetics as well. Just as a photographer learns the
rule of thirds, riggers must know the basic rules of bondage before they can move beyond
them. In the words of Pablo Picasso, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like
an artist.”

Rope Bondage as Artistic Expression

Not every rigger wants to have his or her bunny suspended in midair so that they can
explore every dripping honey hole in sight. It’s hard to believe, I know, but it’s true. Some
riggers (and bunnies, for that matter) love bondage simply for the aesthetic value, and
though sensuality plays a huge part in this, for the spectators, it doesn’t get much more
hardcore than seeing a nip slip every now and again. In Morpheous’ Bondage Extravaganza
