but Plan L does not. Plan F also has some benefits for medical emergencies while traveling in
other countries. Medigap policies do not cover routine dental and vision care or hearing aids.
Here are summaries of the two Medigap plans in your evaluation:
1) Medigap Plan F. This is the most comprehensive of the ten Medigap plans, covering all
of Medicare’s gaps. With Plan F, you have no cost-sharing for Medicare-covered
services. And if you see a doctor who does not accept Medicare assignment, any excess
charges levied by that doctor will also be covered. In Brevard County, you can likely buy
a Plan F policy that has annual premiums in the $2,250 range, or perhaps less. This is
superior but expensive coverage.
2) Medicare Plan L. This plan is less comprehensive than Plan F, but it still has good
coverage. Its estimated annual premiums are in the $1,750 range. Even though you have
some cost-sharing in this plan, you will likely come out $300 or more ahead of what
you’d pay in Plan F – that’s unless you use numerous medical services or undergo costly
treatments. In addition, this plan has a $2,480 out-of-pocket (OOP) limit. It is one of only
two Medigap plans that have an OOP limit. But the limit applies only to those services
that the plan covers. As an example, Plan L does not cover the $183 Part B deductible,
and payments you make toward the deductible do not count toward the OOP limit.
If you want to consider a less comprehensive Medigap plan like Plan L, the UnitedHealthcare
(UHC) policies endorsed by AARP will permit you later to upgrade to one of the more
comprehensive plans without answering health questions. Some people choose one of the less
expensive Medigap plans sold by UHC knowing that if they later want to upgrade to a different
plan sold by UHC, they will not have to answer health questions. If that is something you want
to consider, you should verify with UHC that you’ll later be able to switch to a higher-level plan
without answering questions about your health.
Other comprehensive Medigap plans you might consider are Plans G and N. Not many
companies sell Plan G, but most companies sell Plan N. The benefit designs and estimated
annual premiums for the ten Medigap plans are shown on pages 6-7 of your evaluation.
Two Medicare Advantage plans
Except for Dr. Duncan, your doctors are listed in both plans’ networks. As mentioned earlier, Dr.
Duncan may not belong to any Advantage plan networks because Medicare does not cover
most chiropractic services. Both these Advantage plans have zero premiums for health and
prescription drug coverage as well as zero deductibles for medical benefits.
Here are brief summaries these Advantage plans, with more detailed information available in
Attachments C-1 and C-2.
