Dear Mrs. Miller:
Your Medicare evaluation is enclosed. As I mentioned in an earlier e-mail, you can enroll in Part
B by calling Social Security at (800) 772-1213 and letting the representative know that you want
your coverage to start on September 1 (Medicare coverage begins on the first day of the
month). You should receive your new Medicare card within two or three weeks after you call.
When you enroll in your supplemental coverage, it will include your Part D benefits.
Because you will not have an employer retiree plan to supplement Medicare, you have two
types of supplemental coverage to choose between – 1) a Medicare Advantage plan that
includes prescription drug benefits; 2) a Medigap policy and a Part D stand-alone plan.
Your evaluation compares two Medicare Advantage plans and two Medigap plans. The
estimated costs in the these plans for the last four months of this year are shown on page 3 of
your evaluation. After you’ve reviewed the evaluation and decided on the coverage you want,
you can enroll in one of the following ways:
1) To enroll in one of the Advantage plans compared in your evaluation, you can call the
plan’s toll-free number (shown on pages 2-3). When you enroll in the Advantage plan, it
will include your Part D benefits.
2) If you decide to get a Medigap policy and a Part D stand-alone plan, you can first decide
which Medigap plan you want (Plan G, Plan N, etc.). Then it’s good to call at least three
insurance companies for quotes before deciding which company you will get your policy
from (the phone numbers are shown in Appendix B1). When you enroll, specify that you
want your coverage to start on September 1.
If you get a Medigap policy, you will also need to enroll in a stand-alone drug plan (since
Medigap policies do not include drug coverage). Even though you do not currently take
any prescription drugs, you need to have Part D coverage or else be subject to lifetime
late enrollment penalties. And since you do not take any prescription drugs, you’ll want
to enroll in the stand-alone drug plan with the lowest premiums – the SilverScript
SmartRx Prescription Drug Plan. To enroll in this plan, call its toll-free number – (833)
526-2445 and let the rep know that you want your coverage to begin September 1.
