45As the first light of dawn filters through the dense foliage, Kan%u00e1 awakens in a humble dwelling nestled in the heart of the forest. The air is cool and fragrant with the scent of earth and blooming flowers. He rises before the sun, for the early morning is a time of deep connection with the spiritual world. Today%u2019s the day that Kan%u00e1 will fulfil his rite of passage: from boy to Jaguar%u2019s Apprentice. He has been preparing for this most special of days for as long as he can remember. One that could be deadly if he does not prepare with critical precision.Kan%u00e1 goes to meet with all the village%u2019s shamans in order to begin preparations for the rite of passage. This initiation ritual is an event of great significance, marked by a ceremony as old as the forest itself. As he makes his way over to the Maloca, Kan%u00e1 notices the fluttering of blue morpho butterflies everywhere. These ethereal creatures, with wings shimmering in iridescent shades of azure, are believed to be fragments of the sky, cast down to the earth by benevolent deities. The Carijona release blue morpho butterflies into the air for Kan%u00e1 as symbols of transformation and rebirth.BUTTERFLIESJust as the butterfly emerges from its cocoon, so too do the people believe that individuals can undergo profound spiritual transformations and growth.Tuma and the rest of the shamans begin the day with a series of rituals designed to harmonize with the energies of the forest. Faces are painted in intricate patterns, and sacred items are collected and cleaned.THE RITE OF INITIATION
