49METAMORPHOSISWith the dawn of the new day, Kana%u2019s emerges new. He has crossed the bridge between the mortal and the divine. His eyes now reflect the depth of the forest, his heart beats in harmony with the ancient rhythms, and his spirit is attuned to the whisper of the ancestors.Kana%u2019s takes his place among the Carijona shamans. He will carry the sacred wisdom of his initiation on the long road ahead as he learns the ways to weave dreams, bear visions, and guard the sacred balance between the earthly and the celestial. Guardians of the land by birthright, the Macuna patrol and defend their boundaries, searching for illegal poachers. Some of the Macuna have joined forces with converted environmental protectors (often ex- coca famers or cattle %u2013 ranchers) - and are recording the scale of deforestation at Chiribiquete%u2019s peripheries. This workforce is assessing what species of flora and fauna remain and determining what is being placed most at risk.Backed by international funding, the protectors are paid per field trip and are overseen by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Colombia office*It is hoped that a combination of GPS data and environmental surveys will help establish an effective buffer zone around Chiribiquete.* Dr. Mary-Lou Higgins, the ex- Director of WWF Colombia, is a consultant for this film.
