The Sixth Grade participated in a hands-on STEM
activity which involved assembling bicycles for
Carrollton s community bike share program. Students
learned how to use and properly select a socket &■
ratchet set, screw drivers, Allen wrenches (hex keys),
and an air compressor. Tearns of four collaborated on
the best way to inflate the tires and assemble the front
wheel, fenders, steering tube, handlebars, reflectors,
pedals, seat, and seat post During the process, bolts
and washers were dropped, the first or second socket
selected didn't always fit, and some parts had to be
removed and reinstalled correctly, but the students'
enthusiasm never wavered. The project bolstered their
sense of self-efficacy and growth mindset, and left the
teams .yearning for the next challenge.
Carrollton is most grateful to long-time current mother,
Kim Manna, and Panama Jack For the gift to the school1
of 16 bikes to use in this wellness initiative.
