“ Preventing nuclear war is a moral imperative, but the avoid
ance of war is not a sufficient conception of international relations
today , . . Both the political needs and the moral challenge of our
time require a positive conception of peace based on a vision of
first world order.”
These words from the American bishops’ pastoral letter on war
and peace symbolize the social justice program for the current
academic year.
In October, a group of Administration, faculty, and students
from Carrollton participated in a weekend seminar at Stone Ridge
Country Day School in Bethesda, Maryland, with groups from
other schools of the Sacred Heart across the nation. This provided
a model for a similar seminar on our campus on February 8th.
“The Gods of Metal,” a film, and a lecture by the Reverend'
Kenneth Himes, O.F.M., a moral theologian from Washington,
D.C., stimulated discussions and reflections on “The Challenge of
Peace: God’s promise and Our Responses.” After a two week
period of further study of the letter and the reactions to it, a panel
discussion sought to answer some of the most controversial issues
that has surfaced.
Moderated by Diana Gonzales-Durruthy, of Channel 10, di
verse points of view were debated by General Daniel Callahan,
United States Air Force (ret.), Mr. Guillermo Martinez, editorial
board, Miami Herald, The Reverend Roger Radloff, a practicing
psychologist, and Dr. Joseph Iannone of Biscayne College.
The Carrollton community has worked by means of this pro
gram to achieve the objectives of Goal III, to achieve a social
awareness that impels us to action. The specific action is to be
come peacemakers in our time.
