INRI, perhaps among the most famous
letters in Christian history, are often
depicted in paintings and sculptures of the
Crucifixion. They are in fact representative
of the sign placed over Jesus' head. This
sign was written in Latin, Greek and Hebrew
and the letters INRI, in Latin, stood for Jesus
of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Pontius Pilot
was the procurator of Judea during the time
of Christ. It was Pilot’s ruling that finalized
Christ’s fate and ultimately this sign placed
over Christ’s head. But how was Pilot to
know that the decision to crucify this person,
among the many other decisions he made,
would lead to a movement that would
ultimately influence a nation, empire and
ultimately our human history? Pilot's sign
was simple, his actions were far reaching,
but the result of a crucified Christ who dies
and rises from the dead truly makes Jesus
   more than just a "king.”
