On Scrturday, February 21, 1998, Saint Hugh Church set
the stage for thirty of our second graders to receive their
First Holy Communion. Much hard work and preparation
on behedf of the students, their parents, and their teachers
preceded the day. This is a day which second graders at
Carrollton look forward to since the first day of second
grade. It is prepared for through extensive studying of
what the First Communion signifies. Also, in order to
receive their communion, the students must receive the
sacrament of reconciliation for the first time. The church
was filled with family and friends enthusiastically watch
ing the girls in their beautiful white dresses. The homily,
given by Father Timothy Kandel, was undoubtedly unfor
gettable. The mood of the day was definitely one of happi
ness and excitement. Carolina De Armas put it perfectly
when she said, "The day was special!" It was an unbeliev
ably beautiful ceremony, which will always be remem
bered by the girls, their parents, and the faculty. Receiving
the Eucharist for the first time is cm important event in
which one receives the body of Christ for the first time,
Vangie Delgado, senior says, "My First Communion was a
very special day in my life. It was a step forward for me as
a Catholic, and Carrollton made that day such a beautiful
one that I know I will never forget it."
