As part of a unit on Florida history, the Fourth Grade
class visits the Barnacle. Built in 1891 by one of
Miami's earliest settlers, Ralph Middleton Munroe, it
is the oldest house on its original foundation: in the
Miami area: Commodore Monroe: was,an' avid safer ■
and legendary boat designer and builder. In 19 / 2 _
the estate was donated to the state by the Munroe
family and placed on the National Register of Historic
.Houses. Mary Munroe; Seaorocic, great granddaughter
of the Commodore and1mother of Margaret '24 and
Virginia '26, served as a guide.
