ABOUT THIS BOOK
From our Carrollton "blue and gold" to the kindred spirit we share, for all the ways we
experience "spirit" every day, we are reminded that the Holy Spirit illuminates, inspires and
graces our lives. The theme of the 2010-2011 edition of Yggdrasill, "Spirit," recognizes the
centrality of the Spirt in our lives.
The Rose Window in the Melissa Rodriguez Assembly Hall illustrates this truth. Designed by
Kenneth F. von Roenn Jr. and dedicated to Ann Taylor, RSCJ (Headmistress 1978-1998), the
prismatic glass of the window casts spectral colors into the space and the ribbon form represents
growth and feminine sensitivity. The window's designs intends to draw our attention to the
centrality of the Holy Spirit in Sacred Heart Education.
The octagonal shape of the window is referenced throughout this book in a variety of images
including the geometric patterns of eightfold symmetry found in the Spanish tiles of El Jardin. In
fact, for early Christians, the number eight symbolized the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the
formation of the New Covenant.
Yggdrasill is a giant ash tree in Norse mythology said to support the world and the universe, to be
the creator of humankind. It is known as the tree of life. At the base of Yggdrasill's great trunk lie
the wells of wisdom and destiny. It stands as a symbol of strength and stability. Carrollton School
of the Sacred Heart creates women of strength - women of confidence and conviction in their
beliefs. Like Yggdrasill, Carrollton graduates draw from the wells of wisdom and destiny to help
shape their futures and lead lives in accordance with the Five Coals of Sacred Heart Education.
