So we know that punitive consequences can destroy
rather than build
Consequences such as detentions or withdrawing privileges are good at making children feel bad.
They may work quite well in the short term – just like control methods such as a speed camera
often means people slow down for a short distance (& speed up again a few miles down the road).
They’re not so good at making a long-term difference by helping a child:
1. Work out their needs, stressors & missing skills
2. Plan how to improve for next time
3. Repair and make amends for their actions or words
4. Improve their skills at thinking about the needs of others
