The Manifestation of Aggression in Childhood
Synopsis of Research by Assoc. Prof. Dr. D. Demiralay (2020)
Causes and Expressions of Adolescent Aggression
Aggression arises from biological, psychological, and social factors. Adolescents
express it as a coping mechanism, a means of self-affirmation, or psychological
relief.
Boys tend toward direct aggression; girls more often display verbal and indirect
forms.
Empirical Findings: Aggression and Mental States
- 53% of adolescents were found highly aggressive
- High anxiety (34%), frustration (50%), and emotional rigidity (68%) were
prevalent
- Dominant emotional patterns: dysphoric (60%) and refractory (20%)
Recommendations for Intervention
- Emphasise individual psychological support, warning of the dangers of grouping
adolescents with aggressive states as this can exacerbate difficulties.
- Involve families and address relational dynamics
- Encourage constructive activities (sports, arts) which give a sense of purpose,
feeling valued and needed and status in prosocial ways.
- Implement gender-specific strategies and promote empathy and emotional
awareness
Conclusion
Mental states significantly influence adolescent aggression.
Emotional instability, anxiety, and unmet psychological needs are key factors.
Systematic, personalised support involving schools and families is essential for
effective prevention and correction.
