The Origin of Autism
Autism is a term originally derived from the Greek word ‘autos’,
which literally means ‘self’.
Autism is a lifelong developmental difference that affects
how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people.
It also affects how autistic people make sense of the world
around them. It could be called a ‘processing of the world’
difference.
Autism is classed as a spectrum condition, which means that,
while there are certain difficulties that everyone with autism
shares; autism affects people in different ways.
Some autistic people can live independent lives with no, or
limited, support, while others will need a lifetime of specialist
support.
