When things go wrong, respond with the skills of the paramedic: Calm, Connect,
Support to get them back on track. Concerns can be addressed later. 1
Finding and practising ways to feel calm is crucial to the success of anyone who
2 wants to make the difference to a young person. If you can't get calm, get help.
Connect with the heart before you talk to the mind: use supportive 'team' language 3
to help the child feel understood.
4 When offering support to get them back on track, give the child choice wherever
possible, so they feel a sense of control over the situation.
Stay curious – try to find out what unmet needs and weaker skills were behind 5
