How Air Is Warmed
The earth is surrounded by a layer of
air. This layer of air is called the atmosphere.
In some places, like a desert, the air feels
very warm. In other places, perhaps near a
lake, the air feels cooler. What makes the air
warm or cool?
The sun warms the air, but not as you
might think. You become warm when you sit
in the sun. That is because you absorb, or
take in, the heat form the sun. All objects on
the earth absorb sunlight. Darker objects
absorb more heat than light colored objects.
Water does not absorb as much heat as land.
Air does not absorb heat this way
because it has no color and the sunlight
passes right through it.
