The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
The Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global effort by the United
Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization in
response to the 1990 Innocenti Declaration on the promotion,
protection and support of breastfeeding.
The Initiative includes a global assessment and accreditation scheme that
recognizes the achievements of health facilities whose practices support
breastfeeding and encourages health facilities with less optimal
practices to improve.
