Grooming Your Keeshond Puppy
This is the standard grooming for you keeshond.
8 Weeks:
At eight weeks, your puppy needs to be groomed two times a week. Start with clipping nails using a
regular, human nail clipper. Cut off just the tip. By doing this twice a week, the quick will recede and the nails
will stay back, maintaining the tight, cat-like foot shape as required.
8 – 9 Weeks:
The puppy coat at eight to nine weeks will need combing and brushing using a metal comb and a pin
brush or slicker brush from the skin out twice a week. To eliminate knotting behind the ears, use a sprinkle of
powder, talc, or even corn starch. As you are brushing and combing, use a spray bottle with water. Spray with
a little water as you go which helps to eliminate static.
3 – 4 Months:
Always check your puppies teeth and by three to four months, their new, second teeth will erupt. Give
your puppy plenty of hard toys and bones to chew during this time. This helps the teething process.
5 ½ - 6 Months:
Soon the puppy coat changes into the “wooly” stage and the puppy will look like a lamb and loose its
color. By about five and one-half to six months, new, longer and darker coat grows throughout and the puppy
begins to resemble a keeshond again. During this phase, be sure to comb and brush two times weekly. The
puppy will be shedding some of the puppy coat and will knot if not groomed out frequently. Additionally,
always use the talc behind the ears as well as under the front legs (armpits) and into the panties as this coat will
knot easily.
