Women of Mercury 13

to undertake the same
training that the famed Mercury 7 astronauts received. The “Mercury 13” would pave the way for the success of future female astronauts. Nicolle Zellner will delve into the stories of those remarkable women—and the political and social circumstances that ultimately blocked their chances of space flight. Registration required.

Dangerous Women

Take a peek behind the walls of the old Detroit House of Correction, the only Michigan prison to house female inmates serving long-term sentences, and meet some of the most dangerous women in Michigan history: a serial poisoner who killed over a dozen because
she wanted to don her black dress and attend the funerals; a woman who drowned her unwanted children, one by one, in a nearby river; a wife who used an axe to sever her marriage; and a con artist known as “Queen of the Underworld.” True crime author Tobin
T. Buhk will introduce the audience to these and many other morbidly intriguing characters in “Michigan’s Most Dangerous Women.” Registration required.

The Salem Train Wreck of 1907 with Joe Oldenburg Monday, May 16, 6:00 - 7:00 PM
On Saturday July 20, 1907, at 6 am, 800 employees and friends of the Pere Marquette Railroad boarded an 8 am train for their annual picnic in Detroit at Belle Isle Park. At 9:13 am the excursion train, going 50 miles per hour, rounded a bend in the track, east of Napier Road in Northville Township and ran head on into a freight train going west. The collision killed 28 that day and still remains the worst train crash in Michigan history. What happened that day? Join us to find out! Registration required.
