   Celebrating 95 Years 1925—2020
Oxford Public Library has been a beloved Oxford landmark for 95 years. Its future is about to
embark on a journey that sets the stage for the next 95 years....
During most of 2019 we have been actively engaged with Daniels and Zermack Architects located in
Ann Arbor, to conduct a needs assessment and a feasibility study, and to design a proposed future expansion to better meet the growing and changing needs of our community. We have worked closely with our architects to make sure that both the critical and desired design elements were implemented based on the input we received from the public during our Strategic Plan 2020 process. Some of the highlights that will be proposed in the expanded and redesigned footprint are: additional quiet and small group study rooms, new technology equipped small conference-style board rooms, dedicated space for local history and archives, a dedicated maker space lab, and a very much needed redesign and expansion to the Youth Services Department. At the same time, we will be evaluating the Library’s outdated and inefficient HVAC system and automated
controls for a much needed upgrade as well.
This past year the library has been busier than ever, welcoming nearly 200,000 visitors. 234,186 items were borrowed, an increase of 19% from the previous year. 36,921 residents attended at least one of the 640 lifelong learning educational classes, early childhood development storytimes, guest speakers, or programs that were hosted
by the library, resulting in attendance being up
33%. 4,460 residents participated in outreach services or delivery to homebound patrons—a very critical service to some of our immobile residents. 17,640 visitors used the library to gain access to high-speed Internet, educational databases and to wireless access. 23,463 business owners, parents, teachers and students sought assistance from one of the library’s professional and knowledgeable
staff in locating answers to their business, career,
or reference questions, or in getting help with their homework. The library provided conference facilities and quiet study space to 1,418 local not-for-profit organizations, educational, civic groups, and students who were in need of a location to host a meeting or to study for an exam.
The Board of Directors and administration will be finalizing budgets for construction costs and on- going operational maintenance in the coming weeks in order to get this information out, along with final renderings, for you to review. We are completing all of the necessary groundwork for a bond proposal to be presented to the public for consideration as early as the August 2020 Primary. In closing, this year the Library celebrates 95 years of service to Oxford. We are excited about what the future brings—and we think you will be too. Thank you for making the Oxford Public Library a community icon we can all benefit from and be proud of.
