Lessons Learned: One Challenge
at a Time
Regardless of how many times we fall, we must never stop getting back up. I have told myself and library staff this many
times over the years, yet I am not so sure that it has ever gotten any easier when we have had to do it.

When the Bond failed we all took it hard here at OPL; it is difficult not to, especially when you are so involved in something so big. To everyone who supported our proposal—thank you. Together we will rise again, we will evaluate the plan, and we
will come back to the table with an approach that
is stronger and more suited for success. We are reminded that every time we fall, however difficult it is—we must get back up. And while I am the one who is supposed to be motivating the team, quite honestly the team are the ones who have motivated me.
Theoretical Physicist, Albert Einstein once said, “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” There
is a lot to unpack in this simple little ensemble of words. It is a constant reminder of how important
it is to keep focused on the little things in life,
and that everything we do has an impact on not only ourselves, but the lives of those around us. Regardless of how divided our Country is right now, and how uncertain things might be—I hope that you join us in remembering what makes this community such a great place to live and to raise a family. Stay safe and healthy, and together we will get back up.
life worthwhile”
- Albert Einstein
I have had the opportunity to work with some really amazing people in the twenty-six years I have been in public service so far. Oxford has been no exception to that; in fact there is a reason why I have been serving Oxford for nearly fourteen years as your Library Director. Everyone here makes what we do so much easier, and so much more meaningful. We have been dealt some pretty difficult challenges. More recently, having to navigate the safe reopening of our library, and having to reassemble our team,
all while taking on a major capital bond campaign during a global pandemic. This has certainly made
it one of the most uncertain and stressful times we have ever been charged with leading. However,
like so many of you in our community, we dove in without hesitation and with the hope that together we could get through this.
