Types of sets

 • Finite set : it has a fixed number of elements:

A = {2 , 3 , 5}          C = {1 , 2 , 3 , ……… , 1000}
B = {7}                  D = {3 , 5 , 7 , ……… 99}

• Infinite set: it has no fixed number of elements as :

A = {1 , 2 , 3 , …….}    B = {0 , 2 , 4 , 6 ,……… }

C = {1 , 3 , 5 , 7, ……}

• Empty set: (null set) it has no elements and denoted by Ø or { }

   A = set of whole number between 2 and 3

   B = set of your friends living on the moon.

   Belonging to

  The phrase "belong to" is used in set theory to indicate that
  an element is a member of a particular set. This is typically
  denoted using the symbol ?

•If x is an element of the set A, we say that "x belongs to A"
•and write x?A

•If y is not an element of the set A, we say that "y does not belong to A“
  and write y?A

                                                                       26
