More Than Just Pumps.
Introduction:
The following is a brief guide intended to minimise the risk of unnecessary breakdowns within
the sewage system. We call it “the do’s and don’ts”. Whilst many of the items listed may be
common sense, a pumping station or sewage treatment plant is not infallible and being
electro/mechanical within a wet environment, they will occasionally breakdown. This guide
aims to help you ’housekeep’ the equipment between service intervals, maximising the chances
of trouble-free operation. Whilst we ask that you stick to the guidelines as much as possible, we
don't expect you to search and interrogate your friends and family every time they come to visit,
that would be ridiculous. Minor deviations from the guidelines won’t necessarily cause a failure
of the equipment.
Don’t
Flush ANY of the following items down the toilet - Bag it and bin it!
Disposable Nappies
Sanitary Items
Medical Items***
Paper Towels
Plenty or Cleaning Wipes
Face, Baby or Make-up Wipes
Clothing
Cotton Buds
Food Waste**
Flushable Cleaning Aids *
*‘Flushable’ cleaning aids may be flushable but are NOT ‘Pumpable’.
** Food Waste is widely recycled - Check with your Local Authority.
*** Dressings, Gauze, Sharps and Syringes should be disposed of safely.
Pouring cooking oil or fats into the drains clogs the system and it is also illegal.
Don’t use harsh chemicals particularly if you’re using sewage treatment plants.
Chemicals ruin the biological actions within the plant.
Don’t allow any rainwater to enter a sewage treatment plant.
Don’t interfere with any of the equipment unless you are qualified to do so. If in doubt
ASK.
Please don’t panic if someone accidentally flushes the wrong
thing away, the odd mishap won’t hurt.
