Rooney said he was %u201cbitterly disappointed%u201d in the Pentagon%u2019s decision to move the Naval Strategic Systems Navigation Facility from Brooklyn to Pennsylvania. In a sharply worded letter to Secretary of Defense Elliot Richardson, Rooney said he strongly objected and protested this decision and that he would challenge the Secretary%u2019s decision, which would cause the loss of many civilian jobs. Rooney said he felt the Secretary%u2019s evidence for moving the Facility did not justify the move and warned the Secretary that he would continue to oppose and to do whatever he can to stop the loss of Federal jobs iri Brooklyn. In a related development Rooney, in an effort to meet the expanding medical needs of military dependents and to assist the health care delivery system in the New York area, called today for the expansion of the Naval Dispensary at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.tessori School of Brooklyn, located on Grand Army Plaza, will zero in on the linkage between sexism and racism, a connection becoming increasingly evident, many believe.Steinem, the recipient of extensive coverage as a Women's Liberation spokeswoman, has written articles on politics and current sociology as well as film and television scripts during the past 10 years. She is now working as an editor and writer for Ms Magazine, a national women%u2019s monthly which began publication last year.Sloan, also an editor and writer for Ms., has been a rent strike organizer, a civil rights activist and a participant in various Breadbasket programs, including the breakfast feeding program, welfare cut protests, Black Expo, and strikes against A&P, National Tea and Walgreens. For the past three years she has been a member of Women Mobilized for Change, founded by Joan Brown and Coretta King. Sloan became involved in the Women%u2019s Liberation movement after a meeting with Florence Kennedy the noted attorney, who %u201cturned her on%u201d to an understanding of institutionalized oppression, particularly as it relates to black women, who are victims on two counts.Tickets for the Steinem Sloan evening at BAM are available at The Montessori School of Brooklyn, 17 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn 11238, Tel. 838-1703. Pesce announced that his voluntary attorneys were continuing to pursue the various city and state agencies in an attempt to have the illegal billboards and signs along the Gowanus Expressway, the Belt Parkway and the BQE removed. In February, George Schoepfer, the Deputy Chief Engineer of the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority, at the request of Pesce%u2019s attorneys again requested Mr. Joseph Stein, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Buildings, to inform him as to the status of the various illegal billboards along the abovementioned parkways and expressways. While the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority has the power under its statutes to enjoin those signs and billboards, the Authority believes that the Buildings Department has more expeditious remedies at its disposal. In another action taken by Assemblyman Pesce in regard to hazardous signs along the parkways, the Assemblyman introduced on March 6, a bill amending the Transportation Law which would give the Transportation Department the power %u201cafter a meeting, to order the discontinuance of flashing lights on any billboard, sign or other advertising device, which in its opinion is so situated as to hinder the proper operation of a motor vehicle by distracting the operator%u2019s attention.%u201dThe bill was referred to the Committee on Transportation in the Assembly.PHOENIX, May 3, 1973, Pagg 11MeetingVotesLast April, New York City%u2019s first %u201cdirect democracy%u201d was formed at the first Brooklyn Heights Town Meeting, where the Brooklyn Heights Neighborhood Assembly was voted into existence by those attending the meeting. This year%u2019s Town Meeting will take place Saturday, May 12, noon to 5 pm at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 21 Sidney Place.
